paul.sanders published a new chat: Actually, a Best Of Joy Division is the Way To Go
There are some bands who really only got it together with a few songs, and JD is one of them. Quite a lot of their music is in my view fumbling - interesting to a historian looking for the seeds of the fleeting greatness they attained, but mostly unlistenable.
heh
I like Joy Division covers
cover versions
I dislike their album covers
what - live the souvenir duvet?
s/live/like/
you been spying on me?
you missed 'She's lost Control' off that list, Alex
ok fair point
I could go back and add it
ut people may see this chat
I also personally think Love Will Tear Us Apart is good, but overrated
no - you are wrong
not to the same extent as fucking 'Imagine' (Which is both terrible and overrated)
people like it the most because it hasa melody, which they didn't often manage
but overrated nonetheless
nope
still wrong
what do you think of it, paul?
it's underrated

oh hello Mr Curtis
it oculdn't be much more highly rated, surely?
didn't see you ther
e
lots of people like it because it's a little bit pop
nice of hi to contribute
nly if it was rated as highly as imagine
yes
Suzanna and her Magical Orchestra covered it - you know you've arrived when that happened
it doesn't figure at the top of many 'best songs of all time' lists
but is it THAT good?
we were discussing how highly rated it is
not whether being highly rated is good
Is it, for example, as good as 'In a big country' by Big Country?
oh
it's rated pretty damn highly
most highly rated songs of the 80s
but surely things are accuratel rated according to goodness
off the top of my head
I know things I write about are
anyway
a best of jd is a very good idea - as good as it was last time they did it
and the time beofre
indeed
can't have too much of a good thing
Apart from possibly cake
and beer
but you can have too much of a variable quality thing - hence best ofs
Steely Dan were always high quality - so a best of is a good thing for a different reason
like not having to choose shampoo
(not the band)
(who really don't warrant a best of)

There's people like Smog, and Mogwai that i'd really like a best-of of
because they released so much it's difficult to know where to start
oh, and bloody Yo La Tengo
Yo la bloody tengo
yes
I'd like a best-of of Tom Waits
please
aah yes, me too
we should get someone who knows about him to compile one
Cormac Heron does I think
if we had tom waits music on playlouder, someone could do a playlist
i might do a 'best of electrelane'

I like a band with irony in their name. Used to be a time when I held a special place in my heart for 'da Division' but you can see where I'm going with this as the emos came along and ruined that for me, too.
i think closer is a pretty magnificent collection of songs myself.
it's the 30th greatest alternative album ever
I don't need 30 albums in my life. I've already got 12
is definately maybe at number 1?
definitely not
see what I did there?
Velvet Underground. Plus JoyDiv have 2 in there - one top ten - which my unaquiline eye missed before
an uneagle would presumably be something like a naked mole rat
