I would argue that they are conceivably traditional by modern metal standards but tat the quality of their songwriting outweighs that of the better part of their peers

Actually both of those bands are good

but they're only loosely metal

Boris are often post rock, and sometimes most things. Sunn are ambient and drone as much as metal.

Interesting metal: Meads of Asphodel, (:-o), Cadaverous Condition.
